In theory, ingrown toenails are most common among physically active individuals whose feet are under constant strain. In reality, however, the problem can affect anyone and is often caused by poorly fitting, uncomfortable shoes or improper nail care. An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail edge presses into or pierces the surrounding skin, leading to localized inflammation, pain, swelling, and, in some cases, infection.
Ignoring the issue will only make things worse over time, so it’s best to consult a podiatrist as early as possible.
