A subungual hematoma — often referred to as a bruised nail — occurs when blood collects beneath the nail, usually as a result of an injury or trauma. This buildup happens when small blood vessels under the nail are damaged, leading to pressure, swelling, and a noticeable change in nail color — often dark red, purple, or black.
This condition can be quite painful, especially as the trapped blood creates pressure beneath the nail. In more severe cases, it can even make it difficult to move the finger or toe. Swelling and redness around the nail are also common symptoms.
Small bruises under the nail often heal on their own within a few days to a couple of weeks, requiring no treatment. However, when the hematoma is larger or causes significant discomfort, medical intervention may be needed.
Thankfully, there are safe and effective treatments that can quickly relieve pressure, ease the pain, and speed up the healing process — helping you get back to feeling (and looking) like yourself again.
