Botox wrinkle correction is one of the most popular methods of fighting the signs of aging. However, it’s important to remember that the safety of the procedure depends on where it’s performed. Social media is full of reports about clinics using botulinum toxin of unknown origin—imported from China and lacking the necessary certifications. Such practices can pose a serious health hazard! Learn what Botox is, how it works, and why it’s not worth cutting corners.
Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a substance used in both aesthetic and medical treatments that temporarily “paralyzes” muscles, reducing their activity. This smooths out expression lines and also helps treat conditions such as migraines, hyperhidrosis, and bruxism.
A botulinum toxin procedure is considered safe, provided it’s performed by an experienced physician. The only real contraindications include pregnancy, breastfeeding, neuromuscular disorders, allergies to the product’s ingredients, or active infections at the planned injection site.
The treatment involves injecting type A botulinum toxin into a selected facial area—most often the upper parts of the face. Administering a small, localized dose of the product temporarily blocks neuromuscular transmission, causing the muscles responsible for wrinkle formation to relax, while the skin in the treated area becomes smooth. Other nerve functions, such as skin sensitivity to touch, remain unaffected.
The procedure is minimally invasive and requires no downtime—patients can usually return to their normal activities immediately after leaving the clinic. Mild redness, swelling, or small bruises at the injection sites may occur but usually subside within 1–2 days. It’s important to avoid bending forward, strenuous exercise, facial massage, or sauna use in the first few hours after treatment, as these may cause the product to migrate. Alcohol consumption should also be avoided for about 24 hours. The first effects of botulinum toxin typically appear within 2–3 days, with full results visible after 7–14 days.
The term “Chinese Botox” refers to counterfeit botulinum toxin products that can be found online or in certain beauty salons.
“The so-called ‘Chinese Botox’ can be dangerous because these products often lack certification and reliable testing. They may contain impurities, have uncertain concentrations of the active ingredient, and produce unpredictable effects. This increases the risk of complications—from unsatisfactory results to facial asymmetry, allergic reactions, or more serious health problems that are difficult to foresee,” warns Magdalena Sajnóg-der Kinderen, Aesthetic Medicine Physician.
To ensure the safety of a Botox treatment, always verify which product will be used. Ask to see the original packaging, vial, or product leaflet. If the provider cannot show them or avoids answering questions about the product, treat it as a red flag.
